Decision overview

Which instruction decides the speed?

01
RecogniseA valid lower limit or active special zone
InterpretApply that instruction first

A junction does not end Zone 30.

02
RecogniseResidential or living zone
Interpret20 km/h maximum

Pedestrians may use the full width.

03
RecogniseNo different limit on an ordinary road
InterpretUse region and road layout

Flanders and Brussels: 70 outside built-up areas; Wallonia: 90.

Part 1

Zone 30: one limit across the whole zone

A Zone 30 is not a single-street speed sign. From the F4a entrance sign, the 30 km/h maximum continues through every street and intersection until the corresponding F4b end sign.

End of the zoneA junction does not end it. Continue at 30 km/h until the F4b end sign.
School surroundingsWhere a signed Zone 30 is installed, follow it throughout the marked zone.
Part 2

School streets: restricted during the stated hours

A Belgian school street is temporarily closed to motor vehicles at specified times. It is identified by a C3 sign with a “Schoolstraat” supplementary panel; the panel may also show the operating hours or permitted exceptions.

Belgian C3 restriction signSCHOOLSTRAATRead the hours and exceptions on the supplementary panel.
01
Who may use it?

Pedestrians, cyclists and speed pedelecs. Motor vehicles are excluded while the school-street restriction applies.

02
Which vehicles may enter?

Emergency vehicles when their duty requires it, and vehicles carrying a permit issued by the road authority.

03
How must authorised drivers behave?

Drive at walking pace, give pedestrians and cyclists priority, keep the way clear and stop when necessary.

Part 3

Residential or living zones: people use the whole road

The F12a sign creates a low-speed shared environment. The legal maximum is 20 km/h—not walking speed—and pedestrians may use the full width while children are allowed to play.

Cycling zones: the cyclist sets the pace

The F111 sign marks a cycling zone. Motor vehicles may not exceed 30 km/h and may not overtake cyclists, even when the road appears wide enough.

Part 5

Regional default speeds

Belgium has national traffic rules, but several default speed limits differ by region. Apply these numbers only when no posted sign, dynamic signal or special zone sets another limit.
