Decision overview

Three checks before any overtake

RecogniseIs passing legal here?
InterpretCheck signs, lines and prohibited locations

A clear view does not make an illegal overtake legal.

02
RecogniseIs there enough space and sight?
InterpretPlan the entire manoeuvre

Do not begin unless you can complete it safely.

03
RecogniseAre you passing a cyclist or moped?
InterpretKeep lateral clearance

At least 1 m in a built-up area; at least 1.5 m outside.

Part 6

Special cases do not erase the safety test

↪️ Vehicle turning left

Passing on the right can be permitted when the vehicle is positioned to turn left and the passage is safe.

🚗 Dense queues

Parallel lanes may progress at different speeds without becoming a deliberate right-side overtake.

🚲 Cycling zone

Motor vehicles may not overtake cyclists.

🛣️ Motorway

Keep right; use the left lane to overtake; never use the hard shoulder.

Part 7

Serious and dangerous manoeuvres

−5 exam points in Flanders

Specified serious errors can cost five points on the Flemish Category B theory exam. Dangerous overtaking is among the rules to treat with maximum care; regional exam procedures can differ.
