Belgium has three regions: Flanders, Brussels and Wallonia. The default speed can change when you cross a regional border, so a speed question is never only about the road.

Inside built-up areas
The sign marking the beginning of a built-up area changes the default speed rule. Brussels is the key regional exception to memorise.

These areas use lower limits because drivers share space with children, pedestrians and cyclists. Learn the entrance sign and connect it with one number.
The limit applies from the zone entrance until its end sign.
Drive slowly and expect pedestrians to use the full width.
Outside built-up areas
For a car or another vehicle with a maximum authorised mass up to 3.5 tonnes, the basic regional split is 70–70–90.
A barrier, median or central reservation separates opposing traffic. Painted lines alone do not.

Motorways and vehicle limits
The 120 km/h figure is the general maximum for cars. Heavier vehicles have separate limits, and lower posted limits remain common.

First identify the type of road, then compare the amount above the applicable speed limit with the threshold below. This chapter does not reproduce changing fine calculations.
A driver who has held a Category B licence for less than two years. For this group, a court-imposed driving ban is mandatory from the lower threshold shown above.
Rules and enforcement procedures can change. Official signs, police instructions and current legislation always take priority. This lesson is study guidance, not legal advice.
